Departures from Annville: Study Abroad at LVC

Entering this academic year, Lebanon Valley College offered study-abroad opportunities in 11 countries, including Argentina, Australia, England, France, Germany, Greece, Italy, the Netherlands, New Zealand, Northern Ireland, and Spain. Last year, nearly 90 LVC students participated in short-term and semester-long study-abroad programs, and another 36 students are studying abroad in nine countries this semester. This year, LVC increased the number of full-semester study abroad countries from 11 to 13 by adding a program in China and two programs in the Dominican Republic.

Jill Russell, director of study abroad, continues to seek out additional partnerships. This fall, the College launched an innovative new program in Beijing, China, based at Capital Normal University. “We’re especially excited about this program because it includes an internship,” she says. Each student will work at a multinational company that has a need for an English-speaking intern. “From a career-building perspective, this is huge,” she adds. “To be able to say they’ve worked in a company in China is going to be a tremendous asset for their careers.”

Political science major Brian Kaniuka ’14 is LVC’s first student to participate in the program. “I’ve been to Europe multiple times but I’ve never been to any other continent, so my first reason for going to China was to experience a completely new culture,” says Kaniuka, who also participated in LVC’s four-week summer study-abroad program in Maastricht, the Netherlands, in 2012, and hopes to work in the intelligence field after graduation. “My second reason is the emerging nature of China both economically and politically. China presents an intriguing case: a communist country that’s experiencing large economic gains because of a relatively liberal economic policy.”
