| Alumna’s Investigative Report Up For News and Documentary Emmy |

Alumna Natalia Antelava’s career in international journalism began during her junior year at LVC when she started freelancing for BBC. This 2002 graduate is now making a name for herself among journalists – she was nominated for a News & Documentary Emmy from the National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences.
As a correspondent for BBC World News America/BBC.com, Antelava produced an investigative multimedia report titled “America’s Child Death Shame,” focused on child abuse and neglect in the United States. The comprehensive project combines powerful statistics with heartbreaking accounts from police officers, children’s advocates, doctors, government associations, help centers, victims, and their parents. The documentary concludes with a description of the cycle of violence relating to child abuse:
“While child abuse blights the lives of victims' families, its devastating impact is felt far beyond relatives and friends.
“Abused children are 74 times more likely to commit crimes against others and six times more likely to maltreat their own children, according to the Texas Association for the Protection of Children.
“For this reason, experts believe it is in the U.S. government's as well as society's interest to ensure children are protected from abuse. Each and every citizen, they say, has a responsibility to help break this cycle of violence.”
The 33rd Annual News & Documentary Emmy Awards were presented Monday, Oct. 1 at a ceremony at Frederick P. Rose Hall, Home of Jazz at Lincoln Center, located in the Time Warner Center in New York City. The evebatted attended by more than 1,000 television and news media industry executives, news and documentary producers, and journalists. Awards were presented in 42 categories, including Breaking News, Investigative Reporting, Outstanding Interview, and Best Documentary, among others.
"The journalists, documentarians and organizations we honor this evening are the very best in broadcast journalism," said Malachy Wienges, Chairman, NATAS, in a press release. "In these times of on-going war, economic instability, and the upcoming presidential election, I cannot think of more important work."
Antelava is a recipient of LVC’s Young Alumni Award, for achievements in her profession and significant contributions to the community or the College. Coming to the Valley as part of the International Student Program, Antelava completed her undergraduate majors in French and international relations. Her journalism career began during her junior year when she started freelancing for the British Broadcasting Company (BBC). That year she won a Rotary Ambassadorial scholarship and traveled to Senegal, beginning freelance work.
Upon graduation, Antelava returned to her home country of Georgia and covered the revolution for BBC. She continued to freelance until BBC hired her full-time in 2004, covering the Caucasus region. Antelava has traveled around the world covering various events, including the death of Osama Bin Laden. She covered the ongoing anti-government protests against Yemen’s president Ali Abdullah Saleh, and completed a documentary on the role that the U.S. foreign policy is playing in Yemen's uprising.
Antelava was nominated for the Emmy along with BBC executive producers Kate Farrell and Claudia Milne and producers Ben Bevington and Franz Strasser.
