Students in LVC Special Interest Houses Give Back to Campus and Community
01.08.14 |
This year at the Valley there are six campus residence houses designated for special interest groups of students that are interested in giving back to campus through service. Each special interest house provides a unique service that benefits other LVC students and, with the exception of Centre Hall, works toward a common goal of presenting two programs per semester.

Centre Hall, a two-story house adjacent to the Peace Garden, is the campus’s Academic Service House that houses 14 students committed to focusing on academic achievement and service. Each resident volunteers for 20 hours each semester with the campus tutoring or writing center and maintains at least a 3.0 cumulative GPA.

North College Hall was recently transformed from the campus’s Greek House into a substance free living space for upperclassmen. This transformation allows returning students to select housing in a substance free area while also engaging in leadership responsibilities on campus. Residents participate in active and passive groups on campus throughout the school year in order to gain leadership skills and experience. Megan Brannan, area coordinator, said, “Many upperclassmen living there are thrilled that they could continue living in a substance free location after their freshman year in a substance free hallway.”

LVC’s Women’s and Gender Resource Center is located at 118 N. College Avenue, where the student volunteers reside. These students aid the Center in its mission and programming efforts by hosting 15 open hours per week and working with the Center’s steering committee to present important programming such as guest speakers.

Friendship House, located at the corner of College Ave. and Maple St., provides housing for 16 students that support the College’s aim of enabling students to be people of broad vision. The residents dedicate their time to creating diversity and social justice programming based on the principles of multiculturalism. The House benefits the campus community and operates under the guidance of the Office of Residential Life and Multicultural Affairs.

Sheridan East and West, next door to the Shroyer Health Center, are home to six and eight students, respectively, who are interested in a particular topic or cause. The students, working under the guidance of the Office of Residential Life, carry out their own programming initiatives on campus and in the surrounding community. This year Sheridan East is supporting St. Jude Children’s Research, and Sheridan West is called the Birds and the Bees house. In the past, the houses have focused on the Invisible Children Fund and It Gets Better.
