Cultivating a Love of Learning of Wonder: Ashley Ferrari ’14
05.08.14 |
Graduating senior Ashley Ferrari has taken full advantage of everything Lebanon Valley College has to offer during her four years. Ferrari has fit three high impact experiences in between finishing her triple majors in philosophy, international studies, and Spanish, and a political science minor.

“My first high impact experience came was when I studied abroad in Valladolid, Spain my sophomore year,” Ferrari said. “Going abroad was actually the first time I had ever been on a plane. I stayed with a host family, and all of my classes were in Spanish, so I really felt surrounded by the culture and language. One of the biggest aspects that allowed me to study abroad was the fact that I was able to maintain my financial aid while I was in Spain. I paid the same tuition and room and board as I would have if I was on campus in Annville.”

Another high impact experience took place over the course of two summers when she spent a month in Mexico with Dr. Kathleen Tacelosky, associate professor of Spanish. Over the course of their stay, they performed linguistic and ethnographic research in the city of Puebla.

Ferrari defines her third high impact experience as participating in the Living Scholars Symposium put on by the Department of Religion and Philosophy. “We studied a theme or scholar, and at the end of the year presented our research to that scholar here on campus.”

The journey to LVC was not always clear for her. Ferrari is a first-generation college student and the oldest child in her family. Her great-grandparents were Italian immigrants that made their way to Pennsylvania to work in the coalmines and pursue the American dream. Her grandfather worked in a beryllium plant, and her father is an electrician.

This hard-working heritage motivated some of Ferrari’s studies and research at LVC. “One of the interests in my research in both international studies and philosophy has been the laborer and the subjectivity under which they operate in contemporary conditions.”

When the time came to choose a college, Ashley compared everything that LVC offered. Her father approved of the safety that Annville offers, while she saw the potential for some life-changing experiences such as study abroad and research.

“I’ve always been a good student and interested in schoolwork, but at LVC I was able to cultivate a love of learning and wonder.”
