Suzanne H. Arnold Art Gallery interns at Lebanon Valley College have the unique opportunity to conceptualize an exhibit based on the artwork that is part of the College’s permanent collection. This summer’s exhibit, curated by Lindsay McMasters ’14, is titled “Colonization & the Collection: Selections from the Permanent Collection.”

The Gallery internships are strongly academic. McMasters, an art & art history major from Middletown, Pa., presented a poster at Inquiry 2014, highlighting some of the exhibit’s works and the ideas behind the exhibit theme. She is pictured at right with artist Stacy Levy, whose exhibit was on display during McMasters' internship.

In her abstract, McMasters describes “Colonization & the Collection” as an “informative survey of the various tourist trade objects within the permanent collection” that features Inuit, African, Asian, and European art. She writes, “During the nineteenth century there was increased European and American interest in exotic cultures, such as Asia, Africa and the South Pacific, and a new form of tourism was created. Financial stability allowed the European upper-class to travel to colonized countries, and a vigorous market for tourist trade objects was created.”

The exhibit, which opened July 3, is available for viewing through August 10 at the Suzanne H. Arnold Art Gallery during summer hours: Saturdays and Sundays, 11 a.m. - 5 p.m. Please contact the Gallery for more information at or
