Medical Students Return to LVC to Offer Advice
10.10.13 |

Medical students Adam Shipe ’10 and 2nd Lt. Michael Pence ’09 returned to LVC on Thursday, Oct. 3 to offer career advice and speak about their experiences as osteopathic physicians-in-training. Both are fourth-year medical students at the Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine and are carrying out clinical rotations at Harrisburg Hospital.

Sponsored by LVC’s Pre-Health Profession’s Society (PHPS), the talk benefited current LVC students interesting in pursuing a career in medicine.

Pence, a member of the U.S. Army, is studying anesthesiology and encouraged students to master study skills and prepare for the dramatic increase in material that is covered in medical school.

Shipe, a cardiology student, reminded students that studying for graduate courses has a new significance and is “not about cramming for exams.”

“You will be responsible for people’s lives,” he said.

Both Pence and Shipe encouraged current students and testified that the foundation LVC provided has helped them succeed.

“You will be ahead of the curve through your experiences at LVC…I knew the basics and I knew them well,” Pence said.

Shipe added, “Courses like anatomy and physiology, cell and tissue biology, and biochemistry put me dramatically ahead of the curve. The content and way of thinking in these courses left me with an exceptional foundation for my courses in medical school.”

LVC’s Health Professions Committee, chaired by Dr. Kristen Boeshore, advises students during the medical school application process. In addition, the PHPS, formed in April 2012, offer seminars given by alumni and community professionals about all health fields.

Students interested in LVC’s PHPS should visit or contact PHPS President Katie Wray ’15 or faculty advisor Dr. Walter Patton.
