LVC music students and faculty get a boost each year from the members of Valley Musica, a group of alumni, staff, and community music enthusiasts who pledge their support of the Music Department and help to bring guest artists to campus for concerts, master classes, and lectures.
Last semester, Valley Musica members brought Mormon Tabernacle principal organist Richard Elliot to campus as part of the Distinguished Artists Series for a performance and master class. His passionate story, openness, and expertise inspired a group of 11 LVC organ students to organize a trip to Salt Lake City in May to visit with Elliot and tour the Tabernacle.
Accompanied by Dr. Shelly Moorman-Stahlman, the students enjoyed a “behind the scenes” tour with Elliot before the morning choir broadcast, and the opportunity to play on the Tabernacle, Convention Center, and Assembly Hall organs. The students visited organs around Salt Lake City per Elliot’s recommendations and gained an appreciation of the value of networking within their field on a national level.
These kinds of opportunities – a faculty-led trip and unparalleled learning experience – don’t happen at every college, and couldn’t happen without the support of those who care most about music at the Valley.
Valley Musica members also provides funding for student scholarships, outreach programs for local elementary and high schools, LVC student ensemble tours, and maintains and improves LVC’s music facilities and instruments. Learn more about Valley Musica here.
