LVC Launches Balloons in Memory of Cancer Victims and Survivors March 14 at 11 a.m.

Lebanon Valley College’s Relay for Life kick-off event will take place Thursday, March 14 at 11 a.m. on the patio area outside Mund College Center with a balloon launch in memory of cancer victims and in tribute to survivors.

Balloons for the event cost $1 and were sold Feb. 25 to March 1 inside Mund College Center. Proceeds will benefit LVC’s Relay for Life, which benefits the American Cancer Society. Purchasers are encouraged to write something on the balloon to honor or remember someone they know who has battled cancer.

“Many times people will write a name and a date on the balloon to commemorate their loved ones,” said Jennie Upton ’15, co-chair of the event.

The ceremony will begin with a moment of silence and all of the balloons will be released at once.

This event is in anticipation of Relay for Life at the College, which will be Friday, March 22 to Saturday, March 23 with registration beginning at 3 p.m. in Arnold Sports Center. For many of the students, Relay is an event they are personally dedicated to and moved by.

“I relay because my Mimi lost her battle against brain cancer,” said Betty Ross ’13, co-chair of the event. “I watched her endure pain that no human being should ever have to endure.”

This year’s goal is to donate $44,300 to the American Cancer Society. To preregister or to make a contribution, visit www.relayforlife.org/palvc.

“While organizing Relay is a lot of work and is stressful at times, I am passionate about the cause. Relay is an amazing event that helps to raise a significant amount of money for the American Cancer Society,” Ross said.

The American Cancer Society is the nationwide, community-based, voluntary health organization dedicated to eliminating cancer as a major health problem by preventing cancer, saving lives, and diminishing suffering from cancer, through research, education, advocacy, and service.
