After a memorable study abroad experience in the Netherlands last summer, Lebanon Valley College senior Caitlin Murphy knew she had to return. With the help of the Arnold Experiential Internship Grant, Murphy was able to go back for an 11-week assignment at the Center for European Studies on the University of Maastricht.

An English communications, international studies, and sociology triple major, Murphy is passionate about the transformative experience that can come from studying abroad. She plans to pursue a career in international studies or study abroad administration.

My favorite part of my internship thus far has been the working environment of CES,” Murphy said. “My coworkers are extremely encouraging and patient people who really try to help me learn new skills in order to complete tasks that relate to international education. I have worked with many different programs and have helped CES with recruiting new partners. I have even learned how to operate a copying machine with directions all in Dutch!”

Murphy has been able to explore Prague, Milan, and London in her free time, but maintains a focus and purpose during the internship. “While I am having the time of my life, I am also learning so many small yet important details about study abroad and international students which is already shaping my perspective for my future career,” she said.

At LVC, Murphy works in the Office of Study Abroad, is a staff writer and features editor for La Vie Collegiene, and is captain of the Women’s Basketball team. She has also been active with Habitat for Humanity, Rotary club, Special Olympics and is publicity chair for the Hearts for Haiti Service Project. Professors Marie Bongiovanni, Chris Dolan and Walter Labonte are her mentors for this internship experience.

A native of Minersville, she is the daughter of Francis and Joanne Murphy.
