Colleges Against Cancer Aims for $44,000 through Relay For Life
03.11.13 |
Lebanon Valley College and Colleges Against Cancer will host its annual Relay for Life event March 22–23 in Arnold Sports Center. Registration begins at 3 p.m. and the opening ceremony starts at 4 p.m. The event officially ends at 4 a.m. March 23 with a closing ceremony and digital camera giveaway.

This year’s theme is “Wish Upon a Cure” and activities will be based on the Disney-related theme.

Events will begin each hour, with fun activities such as a dodgeball tournament, spaghetti eating contest, and Disney trivia session. Traditional Relay events such as free haircuts for those willing to donate their hair to cancer victims (pictured at right), the Luminaria walk, and a fight back ceremony will also take place.

LVC students participate in Relay for many reasons – often because they have lost a loved one to cancer.

“I Relay for my nanny; she passed away from lung cancer when I was in kindergarten,” Mike Lebo ’13 said. Lebo is a member of Colleges Against Cancer, which organizes the event. “Even though I can’t remember much from when I was six, I still have memory of her. I spent a lot of time alone after her death, so even as a kindergartener I was dealing with her death in my own way.”

This year’s goal is to donate $44,300 to the American Cancer Society from 512 participants. To preregister or to make a contribution, visit www.relayforlife.org/palvc.

“Nanny is always in the back of my mind. I memorialize her with various activities such as the balloon launch and Luminarias during Relay,” Lebo said.

The American Cancer Society is the nationwide, community-based, voluntary health organization dedicated to eliminating cancer as a major health problem by preventing cancer, saving lives, and diminishing suffering from cancer, through research, education, advocacy, and service.
