Lebanon Valley College Welcomes John McNeill, Professor at Georgetown University

Lebanon Valley College hosts historian and author John McNeill for a presentation on April 2 at 5 p.m, in Leedy Theater in the Mund College Center. This event is free and open to the public as part of the 2013-2014 College Colloquium dedicated to the theme of “revolution.”

McNeill, an environmental historian, author, and professor at Georgetown University is best known for authoring “Something New Under the Sun: An Environmental History of the Twentieth-Century World.” His book, which documents how humankind has impacted the earth, won a 2000 World History Association Book Prize, the Forest Society book prize and a variety of other awards. As a world-renowned text, the book has been translated into at least six languages.

John McNeill is not only known for his personal accomplishments as an author, but is also recognized for being son of William Hardy McNeill, famous historian of the University of Chicago. Together, they co-authored a book titled “The Human Web: A Bird’s eye View of World History.”

Before starting his career at Georgetown University in 1985, McNeill received his Bachelor’s degree from Swarthmore College, followed by his M.A. and Ph.D from Duke University. Currently, McNeill teaches world history, international history, and environmental history at Georgetown.

John McNeill’s presentation is part of the 2013-2014 College Colloquium dedicated to the theme of “Revolution,” a year-long integrated series of guest speakers, performances, exhibitions, films, and academic courses that will consider the ideas of revolution and evolution as competing yet interdependent ways to describe the changes that surround and shape human life.
