Lebanon Valley College presents Carl Socolow, professional photographer, for a photography workshop titled, “Photographing Our Times: The Lyrical in the Banal” Saturday, February 16 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. The workshop is held in conjunction with the current exhibition at the Suzanne H. Arnold Art Gallery, “Gordon Parks: Crossroads.”
Socolow began his career as a reporter-photographer at a small county newspaper in 1978. He later became a photojournalist for The Patriot News, where nearly 4,000 of his photos were published over a four-year span. He started his own photography business, publishing photos in well-known magazines such as Better Homes and Garden. Socolow was a 2006 recipient of the Guggenheim Fellowship in Photography.
Pre-registration for Socolow’s workshop is requested by February 9. Registration fees for gallery members are $30, $35 for non-members, and $15 for LVC students. For more information, please contact the gallery at 717-867-6445 or email gallery@lvc.edu.
The Gallery’s current exhibition, “Gordon Parks: Crossroads,” features the photography of Gordon Parks, one of the first African American photographers to break the color barrier at a major magazine. His photography assignments at Life magazine included topics such as gang warfare, a Rio slum, and a poverty stricken family in Harlem.
Gallery hours are Wednesdays from 5 to 8 p.m.; Thursdays and Fridays from 1 to 4:30 p.m.; Saturdays and Sundays from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.’ and by appointment for groups. Schools and other organizations are encouraged to contact the Gallery for a guided visit. “Gordon Parks: Crossroads” closes March 17.
