LVC Names New Valley Ambassadors

The collective face of on-campus recruiting for prospective students at Lebanon Valley College is the College’s team of Valley Ambassadors – a group of friendly and energetic students who guide tours and answer questions for visiting families.

But with graduation each year comes the need to actively recruit new ambassadors, a process led by two team captains. This year’s Valley Ambassador team captains are Rachael Hoffman ’13 and Libby Cieniewicz ’13. Throughout the 2011–12 academic year, Hoffman and Cieniewicz made flyers and table tents and posted them around campus and the Mund College Center.

Before being named ambassadors, each candidate meets the current team for a group interview before going on to interview with assistant directors of admission EJ Smith and Jennifer Teisher. “We talk to them about how they feel about LVC,” Hoffman said. “If they love it, we know they can give good impressions to visiting families. I love the campus, and as an ambassador, I like to help other people make that decision to love LVC, too.””

This year’s new Valley Ambassadors include 19 students – 13 sophomores and six juniors – that were hired in the spring and trained throughout the summer. “The incoming group is very diverse both ethnically and in their majors, which is something we look for,” said second-year ambassador Collin Straka ’14. “We have to represent the whole campus.”

The new ambassadors represent 17 different academic majors. As testament to the quality of students that the program attracts, six new ambassadors have multiple majors.

“A lot goes into the training process,” Hoffman said. “They come in and we talk about some of the difficult things they may encounter with families. We teach them the proper tour route that we want and the things we want them to know about each building.

“Mainly, we tell them to be themselves. We chose them because they have great personalities and stories, and that’s what we want families to see.”

“A lot of it is learning about majors and things that you don’t necessarily know much about coming in,” Straka said. There’s a lot of information to retain, but the summer is also about bonding, he added. The entire group of ambassadors competes in laser tag and goes on a campus-wide scavenger hunt.
